José Manuel Durão Barroso foi Presidente da Comissão Europeia em dois mandatos (2004/2009 e 2009/2014) e serviu por doze anos no Governo de Portugal em várias posições, incluindo como Primeiro-Ministro e Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros.

As suas nomeações académicas incluem a de professor visitante na Universidade de Georgetown e professor visitante na Universidade de Princeton. Atualmente, é professor na Universidade Católica de Portugal, onde é o diretor do Centro de Estudos Europeus, e na European University Institute, School of Transnational Governance, em Florença.

Após ter sido Presidente do Conselho da Goldman Sachs International desde 2016, atualmente é Presidente dos Conselheiros Internacionais na Goldman Sachs.

É Presidente do Conselho da GAVI, a Aliança das Vacinas. Também é Presidente da Assembleia Geral do Conselho da Diáspora Portuguesa.

Em nome da União Europeia, recebeu o Prémio Nobel da Paz em 2012.

Recebeu mais de 30 doutoramentos honorários de universidades muito prestigiadas, incluindo Genebra, Georgetown, Edimburgo, La Sapienza / Roma, Pittsburgh, Brasília, Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Universidade Hebraica de Jerusalém, Kobe, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa e Universidade Católica de Portugal.

Foi o fundador e editor da Revista de Ciência Política, a primeira publicação académica nessa área em Portugal.

Além do Grande Colar da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique e da Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Cristo de Portugal, ele recebeu as mais altas condecorações de muitos países, incluindo Espanha, França, Brasil, Reino Unido, Alemanha, Grécia, Japão, Países Baixos, Polónia, Finlândia, Timor-Leste e Ucrânia.

Ele recebeu o Prémio Europeu Carlos V, da Espanha, o Prémio Quadriga, de Berlim/Alemanha, o Prémio de Liderança Distinta, do Atlantic Council, em Washington DC, entre outros.

É cidadão honorário de Lisboa, Rio de Janeiro, Atenas e Delfos.

É membro Honorário da Academia Portuguesa de História.

José Manuel Durão Barroso was President of the European Commission during two mandates (2004/2009 and 2009/2014) and served for twelve years in the Government of Portugal in several positions including as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

His academic appointments included visiting professor of Georgetown University and visiting professor at Princeton University.  He is currently a professor at the Catholic University of Portugal, where he is  the Head of its Center for European studies , and at the European University Institute, School of Transnational Governance, Florence. 

After being Chairman of the Board of Goldman Sachs International since 2016 , he is currently Chairman of International Advisors at Goldman Sachs .

He is Chairman of the Board of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance .

 He is also Chairman of the General Assembly of the Council of the Portuguese Diaspora.
 

On behalf of the European Union he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012. 

He was awarded over 30 honorary doctorates from very prestigious universities, namely Geneva, Georgetown , Edinburgh , La Sapienza /Rome , Pittsburgh , Brasilia , Catholic University of São Paulo , Hebrew University of Jerusalem , Kobe , and Technical University of Lisbon and Catholic University of Portugal .

He was the founder and Editor of Revista de Ciência Política , the first academic publication on that field in Portugal .

Besides the Grande  Colar da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique and the Gra-Cruz da Ordem de Cristo, from Portugal , he received the highest decorations from many countries , including Spain,  France , Brazil , the UK, Germany , Greece , Japan , Netherlands , Poland , Finland , Timor Leste and Ukraine .

He was awarded the European Prize Carlos V, Spain, the Quadriga Prize , Berlin/Germany , the Distinguished Leadership Award , Atlantic Council, Washington DC,  among others .

He is an honorary citizen of Lisbon , Rio de Janeiro, Athens and Delphi .

He is Honorary member of the Portuguese Academy of History.
