É Reitora do Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa desde março de 2018.
Foi Ministra da Educação no XVII Governo Constitucional, entre 2005 e 2009. Presidiu ao Observatório das Ciências e das Tecnologias do Ministério da Ciência e da Tecnologia, entre 1996 e 2003.
É investigadora no CIES-Iscte (Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia) desde 1986, onde, entre outros cargos, integrou a Direção (1989-96). É autora de diversos trabalhos publicados, com especial destaque nas áreas de Sociologia das Profissões, Sociedade da Informação e das Políticas Públicas.

She has been the Rector of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon since March 2018. She served as Minister of Education in the XVII Constitutional Government of Portugal, from 2005 to 2009. She chaired the Observatory of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Science and Technology between 1996 and 2003.
She has been a researcher at CIES-Iscte (Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology) since 1986, where she held various roles, including serving on the Board of Directors (1989-1996). She is the author of numerous published works, with a particular focus on the Sociology of Professions, the Information Society, and Public Policies.
